The original “Modern Times” featured Charlie Chaplin dealing with mans relationship with technology in the industrial age. This new work looks at our relationships in the age of Information and where it is taking us. Using imagery from brochures provided by the Department of Homeland Security, the animation looks at the fears we deal with in our everyday lives as opposed to the terror the government would prefer we concentrate on. It is not only a discussion of fear, but the effects these emotions have on us and how these ideas are transmitted. This type of iconography is used in very polar situations. My work attempts to capture the seemingly uncontrollable transient of time. Through my efforts to regain some control and understanding of the perception of time, I have created an evolving portrait though a means of self-preservation. The consistency of the pose and detached almost unemotional expression emanate feelings of a sombre nature, which reflect on our preoccupation with the escalating pressures of our daily existence. You know what I mean, by having the light falling into the tub. Luckily, I was young enough - or foolish enough - to not worry about that. So I used to put on the thing on - I forget what – well, on the shower rack. I would clip on the clamp light, you know, and everything worked out OK by the end. Suddenly a balloon appears in the scene and flies up to the sky, till it briefly disappears. Like an egg or a sperm being released in the world. A life, making its appearance and disappearance in the world, momentarily marking existence. And the foreigner, the exiled, the other, leaving his homeland in search of another.
