still photo of film Giocattoli Futuristi (Futurists Toys-back to the futurists) directed by Claudio Castelli
Italy, Art / Artist, 2005, other video, Color, Magnetic Stereo, 10:50:00

The storytelling [in Futuristic Toys] aims to be a reprise of a certain futuristic representation, a grotesque tale of the lack of psychology in this type of dramatic scenes, and which would spark a sense of loss and amazement in the viewer, still remaining in a dreamlike vision. On the other side it is an expressionist "drama" which contextualize the human being ruled by the "mechanicity" built by himself and it wants to awake his asleep conscience. The drama, actually pretty ironic, actually, touches also issues raised by classic Italian literature as "La Divina Commedia" and "I Promessi Sposi" ,making them extremely synthetics - as Futurist theater was. The film can be considered in a ... more info

France, Music, 2004, Color, Magnetic Stereo, 00:03:49

One of SubmarineChannel's most popular projects is 'Pause', an online collection of innovative music videos. This great promo by Gabriel Malaprade for the French band Eurostar is based on a simple postproduction trick that involves controlled fast-forward and reversal of the film. In ten different scenes, the effect is that the movements and gestures of the actors are transformed into quirky, offbeat choreographies. This music video's got all the right ingredients: a strong concept, a talented director, great styling, and a good song.... more info

USA, Animation, 2006, Color, Magnetic Stereo, 00:05:48

'Naked' is a contemporary six-part documentary series, produced by Submarine, completely animated using the Rotoscope technique. With rotoscoping, live action footage is traced by animators. Not the most common approach for a non-fiction production, but in this case it's very appropriate, considering the series' subject. In 'Naked', children from the age of 10 to 13 talk openly and frankly about their personal experiences in dealing with the changes that are going on in their bodies as they enter puberty.... more info

USA, Animation, 2006, Color, Magnetic Stereo, 00:01:19

This is Mumbleboy's one-minute remix of his old-school flash animation series, 'The Boy', which was commissioned by SubmarineChannel in 2003. Mumbleboy's work has developed quite a bit since he first started experimenting with Flash animation. The complete series (seven episodes) of 'Waterlanders' (Waterworks'), by the Berlin-based animator M.I. De Heer. De Heer creates hybrid, episodic shorts in which he combines animation with photography or video. Most of his stories are slightly unsettling and display a dark sense of humor (see also 'All Things New' in SubmarineChannel's 'Chunks' program). But in this series of "best-case scenarios", De Heer's characters experience a rare conjunction of positive circumstances that puts them in a state of utter euphoria with some rather striking consequences... more info
