Opening Reception:

Houston, Texas, USA

HOUSTON, Texas, March 17, 2003—Microcinema International, and the Blaffer Gallery, the Art Museum of the University of Houston, are pleased to present two weeks of short film projections and screenings highlighting the work of artists who produce, write, shoot, score and edit their own films, on view in the upstairs galleries. Guest artists Julie-Christine Fortier from Rennes, France and Christopher Keller from Houston will be present for the Opening Reception, which will also feature a formal screening, lecture by the curators, and music by DJ Grils Baloy . Formal screenings will also be held on Saturdays and Sundays starting at 2:00 pm.
The exhibition, organized by Microcinema’s founders, Patrick Kwiatkowski and Joel Bachar, features emerging and independent film and video “single-author” artists who perform most or all of the tasks involved in the making of their works. These artists explore the limits of the self in an artistic medium that is dominated by complex and collaborative relationships.

“Exhibiting films and videos as visual installations alongside formal screenings in a gallery setting is something new for Microcinema and we are excited about the prospects for the viewers as well as the filmmakers,” comments Patrick Kwiatkowski. “Indeed, many of the artists in the exhibition cross the boundaries between visual art and film.”

Featured artists include: Yuri A. (Zurich); Christopher Keller (Houston), Michelle Beck and Jorge Calvo (New York City); J.D. Beltran (San Francisco); Julie-Christine Fortier (Rennes, France); Kasumi (Cleveland, OH); Lev (San Francisco); Evan Mather (Los Angeles); Bärbel Neubauer (Munich, Germany); Mark O’Connell (Seattle); John Palmer (San Francisco); Larilyn Sanchez (New York); Abre Chen (Brewster, NY); Takagi Masakatsu (Japan); Koto Ezawa (San Francisco); and Brett Simon (Los Angeles) and others.

Microcinema International (www.microcinema.com) promotes, exhibits and distributes independent film and video via the International Microcinema Network, an ever-evolving syndicate of alternative exhibition venues and outlets.
