Bio:
Varda shifted her focus from choreography to filmmaking after watching Nicholas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now while studying acting and directing at NYU. Varda, who also paints and has a degree from Cornell University in Theatre Arts, saw in Roeg’s movie the potential to combine her passion for diverse art forms into a single medium. She went on to earn an MFA in filmmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute. Following graduate school Varda worked as a Script Supervisor on commercials, television shows and features. Script Supervising has afforded her the opportunity to work with some extraordinary independent directors including Jim Jarmusch, Wayne Wang and Carol Ballard. Running lines with Nicholas Cage, Gena Rowlands, Keaneau Reeves and other accomplished actors has given her insight and appreciation for the practical application of their craft. Varda has made films for the internationally acclaimed performance art company, Soon3. She has co-written feature length screenplays with her partner Patrick S. Bennett, and has directed several award-winning shorts. She was one of seven directors to be selected out of over three hundred entrants to participate in a digital filmmaking contest called Flicks on 66. Her newest short MIRROR-MIRROR evolved out of this competition, premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival and was recently acquired by GreenCine.com for on-line distribution. Varda is developing the feature length movie MADLY IN LOVE, and editing SHANE, a documentary about the inspiring relationship between a dying man and the three volunteers who care for him. Varda, a wife and mother of two daughters, Paloma and Raven, dedicates her time to making engaging and provocative films that explore our essential nature and deepen our understanding of what it means to be human.
