Filmography/Awards Info:

1. Why did you make this film?
I think I made this film to try and understand what it's like to get older – it happens to everybody.

2. How long did it take to make this film?
It took me about a year to make this film. I work full time and I'm pretty lazy. I interviewed Lena twice in her apartment and asked her many of the same questions the second time. He answers were really similar, in some cases identical; down the cadence of her voice. I shot the film in one day. Then we went out for Chinese food. Later, when I started playing with footage, I noticed how nice it sounded to overlap her answers, weaving the similarities in her different stories together to touch on various thematic points. It was also a good way to get a lot of information across with very little footage. I had very little footage.

3. What was the biggest challenge you faced in making this film?
Making the picture "go with" the sound. It's really a sound piece. With pictures instead of a movie. I transferred my work print to video by projecting it on the wall. This made the film look kind of low-fi, Super 8 in a way that I like. I edited on a liner Beta SP system I "accessed" at a local university during the hours of 6 PM and 8 AM. Another big challenge was not knowing what I wanted to say or how I wanted to say it. That's why it took so long to edit. Actual time spent editing was 16 to 18 hours. Time spent thinking and fretting about it was about a year.

4. Do you have any "war stories" that you would like to tell us about the making of this film?
No, even the Chinese food was good.

6. Do you enjoy one aspect of filmmaking more than any others?
I think you can learn a lot about yourself every time you make a film.

7. In what country or region do you live? Is it important to your art? If so, in what way?
I live in Durham NC. I grew up around Boston, spent time in CA and Iowa City, IA. The south is really different culturally. I kind of feel like a fish out of water sometimes. It's made me really appreciate a good northern accent.
8. What does "Microcinema" mean to you?
Small Movies. I think you can tell big stories in a small movie.

9. What does "Independent" mean to you?
Independent is the freedom to make what you want without being influenced by whose going to buy it. If AOL owns Time Warner and Time Warner owns CNN/Headline News/Turner Broadcasting etc., all the information from these sources has lost all credibility. I find the implications of the concentration of media ownership really scary. However, I love all the small websites that keep cropping up everyday, even though the current streaming technology/bandwidth leaves something to be desired. Right now it's only possible to screen short films/videos because of the download time and this is all dependent on your viewing audience being lucky enough to own computers, as well as having the knowledge and the willingness to seek out new things. Because there are enough people looking for stories that aren't products of a media mega-corporation, short films are starting to "matter" again. This is the first time in 50 years or so there's a venue for short films that isn't the insular film festival circuit. It's really interesting and exciting, but I think we are going to look back on this time as the "golden days" of the internet.

10. What are a few tips you can give to other filmmakers?
You don't have to spend a lot of money to make a good, honest movie – as long as what you are trying to say matters to you.

11. Do you have ideas for another film? If so, will you share them with us?
I want to make a movie about water - it's everywhere.

12. Who is your favorite film director?
My friend Jim Haverkamp.

13. What is your favorite film?
Lately, I really like "Salesmen" by the Maysels Bros.

14. What else would you like to tell us?
Sorry it took me so long to send this to you. I don't get enough slack time at work to do all the things I want to do.
