Bio:

Richard Koenig is originally from Bloomington, Indiana. He received his BFA in 1985 from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York, and his MFA in 1998 from Indiana University, Bloomington. Later that year, he began his present position at Kalamazoo College, Michigan. He teaches Photography, Digital Art, and Visual Fundamentals. Next year he will add Advanced Studio, and A History of Photography to his repertoire.

Richard was asked to give an artist's lecture in conjunction with the exhibition, Dinner with Dali, Surrealism and Photography at the University of Toledo, Ohio, November 1999. He also spoke on his work Inserts and Suspended Images at the regional conference of the Society for Photographic Education in Carbondale, Illinois, November 2001.

Mr. Koenig's photographic work has been in several invitational, and numerous juried (international and national) shows over the last three years. He has won several cash awards along the way and was chosen as a finalist in The Roche Contemporary Art Prize, an all-media exhibition and tour in Australia, in February 2001.

His video work has been shown in juried shows, several microcinema events, and two film festivals: the 13th Onion City Film and Video Festival in Chicago, Illinois (September 2001) and the den haag film and video festival in the Netherlands (May 2002).

Koenig had two one-person photography exhibitions during 2002: one in Portland, Oregon (January), and another in San Francisco, California (April-May). His work was also chosen as part of The Midwest Photographers Project at the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Columbia College, Chicago.

Richard has attended three Artist Residencies in as many years: The Vermont Studio Center in 1999, Studio Camnitzer, near Lucca, Italy, in 2000, and the Millay Colony for the Arts, Austerlitz, New York, in 2001. This last residency was fully funded by the Millay Colony.

Related to The Midwest Photographers Project, but looking forward to 2003, Richard will have a one-person show at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in May/June of next year. Concurrent with that show, he will be part of a three-person show, entitled Altered Scenarios, at Flatfile, a Chicago gallery.
