Bio:
The subjects of my series are often simple, everyday moments. They may consist of a tree, a discarded photograph, or the corner of a room. By looking to the mundane, I want to help the viewer look beyond the familiar and see common human experiences. These themes are evident in one of my recent projects entitled “Forgotten,” a work comprised of photographs and video pieces. The “Forgotten” series speaks to the transitory nature of identity and existence. Memories make up who we are, and once forgotten, our identity and its defining moments are lost. I was fascinated with using lost memories to recreate meaning. I uncovered discarded, old snapshots and Super-8 films, reworking them to capture the elusive and fragmentary nature of individual experience. The photographs are isolated against various surfaces that reflect the neglect and passage of time. The films are restructured with the use of repetition, cropping and sound, elevating simple moments into a reflection of forgotten human experience. Both the snapshots and home movies, and the resulting photographs and video pieces, echo the mortality of memory and identity. On one hand, there is a sense of alienation at the snapshots and films that have been stripped from their context. On the other hand, the photographs and films are a rebirth of private moments from our past lives, once tossed away, now recreated: always a reminder of the fleeting nature of time.
