Bio:
I have a new film, "Britton, South Dakota" showing in the NW Film Festival this week. The film is made with archival footage (Prelinger Archives) that Ivan Besse shot in 1938. the distance formula : Johnne Eschleman composed the amazing score for it. It is showing in the Shorts 1 program Friday Nov 7th at 7 Pm at the Guild Theatre and Monday Nov 10th same time and place. "Not only found footage, but a found film made 60-some years ago directly addressing contemporary structural concerns. I wish I had made this film today. Oh, it was made today." James Benning ********************************************************* Core Sample was the brainchild of two of the Portland art scene’s most seasoned observers: longtime arts and culture writer Randy Gragg and Terri Hopkins, curator of The Art Gym at Marylhurst University. Recognizing that the city’s art scene has reached an entirely new level of eclecticism, energy and sophistication, their idea was to create an “institution for a weekend” to take a “core sample” of Portland art in the year 2003. The show took place October 11-19th. Check Core Sample for more info. For “The Hunt” show, curated by painter Michael Brophy and myself, I made a video refrigeration installation entitled “Hunting Requires Optimism”. It focused on a segment of the hunt as experienced by the North American Gray Wolf. My work reflects an interest in place, relationships between bodies and landscapes, and all sorts of borders. Working in experimental and documentary forms,I produce films, videos and installations that explore the possibility of poetry in contemporary society, while sometimes providing a vicious, satirical commentary on that society. Currently I am making a 16mm experimental documentary essay entitled “CRITTER”, about the reintroduction of gray wolves into the modern West. My focus is on the battles that humans play out over the management of the wolf, the most managed animal in the West, and the political borders that the wolves unknowingly cross.
