Bio:

Kristie participates in many illicit occupations in order to support her nasty filmmaking habit, including teaching video editing in Chicago, running various membership web sites, working as the program director of the Z Film Festival and creator of the successful 72 Hour Feature Project. She has attempted to elevate her intimate fascination with bodily functions and primal urges to the level of art. In the process, she has received generous grants from such places as the Princess Grace Foundation, and the Film Society of Lincoln Center (New York), as well as a full scholarship from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she received her Master's degree in Film and Video in 2001. Kristie is a Producer on Usama Alshaibi's documentary film project, Nice Bombs, which has received funding from the Creative Capital Foundation, and was invited to participate in the Tribeca All Access Connects program in spring 2005 where it won the Creative Promise Award. Kristie's work in film and video has been shown in dozens of festivals across the Americas, Europe, and Australia. She is the founding owner of Artvamp, LLC. Kristie's alter ego, the fictional prostitute and porno actress Echo Transgression, appeared on MTV's Sex2K, and is also the central character of Alshaibi's first feature length digital film entitled Other People's Mirrors. She has been a frequent contributor to $pread Magazine, and is finalizing her next feature length script.

Nice Bombs ; DV; color; 92:00
In Nice Bombs filmmaker Usama Alshaibi returns to Baghdad to reunite with his family after nearly 24 years. This documentary navigates through his unique relationship to an Iraq that is much different than the country of his childhood.

Usama captures the conflicting reactions to the conditions of life in Baghdad. Through a wide range of opinions and experiences he provides a broad panorama of voices long neglected under Saddam’s regime.

His cousin Tareef enters the room upon hearing an explosion. “It’s a bomb. A Nice Bomb,” he explains. The phrase is indicative of his family’s nonchalance about their situation. As one young boy put it, “We’re Iraqis. It’s normal.”

With humor and resilience Nice Bombs explores Usama’s dual role as both Iraqi and American.

* "Slaughtered Pigtails"
DV; color; 2:32
co-director, camera, editor (w/ Kristie Alshaibi)

"Usama Alshaibi and Kristie Drew(Alshaibi) continue in the slasher vein with their own Slaughtered Pigtails, a hack 'n' slash Friday the 13th style chase scene fragmented down to its sound-bite essentials (Run-Fall-Run-Fall-Turn-Scream-Die-The End). Tactile and frenetic, it achieves startling poetic lyricism when the hyperspeed action is slowed down once the victim is pinned to the ground. It creates a self-conscious empathy for the victim, sadly absent from most splatter films (admittedly enjoyable on their own level)."

* "Ass"
DV; color; 9:00
director, camera, editor, sound design (w/ Echo Transgression)

In Ass, sexual pleasure is achieved individually with no negative consequences... The rapid editing of Ass compels the spectator to look while simultaneously hindering the chance to scan and objectify the image. The role of the spectator as anonymous voyeur is challenged as the volume of the woman's groan in Ass gets louder. Its extreme volume makes the spectator conscious of his/her gaze and so the sexual act on display is seen as the protagonist's pleasure, not the spectator's."
