Microcinema Interview/Article:
1. I originally came from a live performance background and digital video was just a natural extension of my art. Working in video allows me to take my performance to a larger audience, because I can easily distribute it across the country. The initial emphasis in my work is the story. I am very engaged with narrative devices, which usually guide my work through to completion. I have a very pragmatic approach to making my art. 2. I think my work is unique because I do not create exclusively for film. When I create, I think of creating for both live performance and for film. The problems created by thinking and working in both two and three dimensions are complex, but provide a stimulating and positive influence. 3. Technology has made it easier for me to be more self-reliant. I have the capacity to shoot, edit and produce my films as well as write and produce the music for them. Technology is ever evolving which permits new and interesting opportunities for creating art. 4. I am driven by movement, time and rhythm. I do not have a formula for creation. I can start with a specific series of movements or I can create the entire musical score and build around it. I usually start with some type of narrative theme or idea. There are both chickens and eggs in my creative processes. 5. Narrative is a strong element of my work. The complexities of any narrative can be worked, adjusted and applied to any idea. The linear aspect of film is very intriguing. It is a specific amount of time that one can distort and reorder, which enables one to tell their story in interesting and provocative ways. 6. I started making self-portraits because they were convenient. Over the past three years, I have moved around a lot. Also, I have just begun my career in New York City and finding the time and money to create has become difficult. I have become increasingly self-involved and self-reliant out of necessity. I always have access to myself and I work cheaply. I think this has led me to doing self-portraits. |
