Bio:
Phillip’s progression to directing commercials follows a logical development arc that began with studies in creative advertising. After three rejected applications to film school, Phillip went on to make a story telling exercise from one of those into a short film. BIRD IN THE WIRE went on to become, along with Moulin Rouge, the only Australian film in Official Selection, in Competition at Cannes 2001. The award winning BIRD IN THE WIRE has since played a theatrical season nationally with The Closet (Le Placard) and appeared at festivals in over twenty countries. The success and controversy surrounding Phillip’s other, more indigenous short film RETURN TRIP, drew critical acclaim locally from filmmaking and political communities alike for it’s stand against the removal of Melbourne’s tram conductors. The film was used in numerous forums debating the issue and is said to have helped contribute to the reinstatement of over 100 tram conductors. RETURN TRIP was made in protest of their being replaced by ticket machines three years ago. Shortly after making RETURN TRIP Phillip was commissioned to direct another short celebrating the spirit of the conductors, this time used as a commercial vehicle to promote a local French community group. The impact of Phillip’s modest body of work is testament to his ability to direct films that celebrate the spirit of the common touch using beautiful imagery and unlikely locations.
