Bio:

Gay white male, Irish Catholic Buddhist or perhaps I should write former dancer, ex- marathon runner, now paraplegic. By day I am an arts administrator, at night I write personal narrative, on weekends I make visual video poems.

I danced with Chicago Moving Company, Contemporary Dancers in Winnipeg, and Theater of the Open Eye in New York in the 1970s. Transitioning into administration, I managed the companies of choreographers Laura Dean and Trisha Brown and was General Manager of PepsiCo Summerfare. In 1986, I moved to Philadelphia to work as a Program Officer for the Pew Charitable Trusts. Two years later, I became the Curator of Performing Arts at Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. In 1996 I was appointed Executive Director of San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. In March 2003, I became the Program Officer for Arts and Culture at The San Francisco Foundation.

Throughout my administrative career, I have continued to make art. I am interested in translating personal narratives into a broader cultural context as a lecturer, writer, and video artist. Multi-media projects have included radio, television, and internet commentaries, in addition to collaborating with other artists on gallery and web-based exhibitions. I have spoken at numerous universities and national conferences throughout the United States, as well as professional meetings in Japan, Canada, Poland, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Australia, and England. I have given commencement addresses at Cranbrook Academy of Art and San Francisco Art Institute.

My writing has appeared in the Utne Reader, Art Papers, Hungry Mind Review, Bay Area Reporter, San Francisco Examiner, StarTribune, Inside Arts, Mpls/St.Paul Magazine, New Mobility, Disability Studies Quarterly, P-form, New York Times, International Journal of Arts Management, Shambhala Sun, High Performance, Lavender, Southern Voice, Grantmakers in the Arts Reader, San Francisco Chronilce, and Dance USA/Journal. My work has been anthologized in Queer Dharma, Out in All Directions, and Management Tools for Arts Professionals in East and Central Europe. I co-edited Queer Crips: Disabled Gay Men and Their Stories, forthcoming from Hayworth Press.

My videos have been screened in festivals, museums, hospitals, and universities in the United States, Canada, Brazil, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Russia, and throughout Europe. My work has been televised on KTCA/PBS and on Free Speech TV and is in the collections of numerous libraries and universities.

Awards and recognitions include the William Dawson Award for Programming Excellence (1995), First Bank Sally Ordway Irvine Award for Artistic Vision (1995), Dance USA’s Ernie Award for contributions to the field (2000), Gerbode Foundation Fellowship (2001), Acadia Summer Arts Program Residency (2001) and a Harvard Business School summer scholarship (2002). My video work has been supported with grants from Arts over AIDS (1993), Jerome Foundation (1995), Tucson/Pima Arts Council (1996), Film Arts Foundation (2000), and the San Francisco Arts Commission (2001 and 2003). Commendations have been received from the Reeling Film Festival (1995), Superfest (2001 and 2002), PlanetOut’s on-line Short Movie Awards (2001), and California State Fair (2002).
