2008 Marks the 13th season of Independent Exposure and one more year into the explosion of independent cinema on the web. The rise of Youtube and other online video sites such as Metacafe, Vimeo and Viddler provides a unique singular experience to watch independent film on more websites than ever before. This drive to push all content to the web steals the opportunity of discussion and the sharing of the cinema experience with other filmgoers, as was standard in the early Microcinema movement. For that reason we feel a great opportunity to push these films back into real life meeting situations to bring back community and culture into the experience of independent cinema.
This year we had more submissions than ever, a metric we use to gauge the overall health of independent filmmakers in the world. By that metric, independent film is thriving and flourishing in this new market. We curated five programs for 2008 - showcasing contemporary, progressive, artistic, and socially and culturally relevant short films and videos. Each program was thoughtfully curated to present short works in our famously diverse and eclectic style with the objective being to challenge, intrigue, surprise, and most importantly - to entertain audiences worldwide.
2008's Independent Exposure will be screened at film festivals, microcinemas and art events worldwide. We will again be featuring selections from past Independent Exposures at the Virgin Mobile Festival in Baltimore. For the 3rd year in a row, Microcinema is the sole provider of entertainment in between musical acts. Over the course of the two-day event, 10 ½ hours of short and ambient film from the Microcinema and Independent Exposure collection was screened. Independent Exposure will be again included in Asthmatic Kitty's Unusual Animals series, a curated day-long event of music and film.
Congratulations!
In 2008 we were able to have Asthmatic Kitty Records select our top filmmakers and curate a Best of 2008 edition.
Our Best of 2007 series curated by Hal Hartley will continue to be screened through the world in the remainder of 2007 and 2008.
Thank You
We would like to thank Panasonic Broadcast for its support of Independent Exposure. We thank our venue partners for developing and maintain their communities – we know how much work that takes! But most of all we thank the artists whose creativity and passion provides the fuel for all of us.
