SURVIVING DESIRE "Knowing is not enough. But not knowing doesn't help much either." Jude is a college literature professor who has been stuck on a passage from Dostoevski's "The Brother's Karamozov" for a number of weeks. His students rebel and he himself begins to think his intellectual crisis is somehow connected to his heart stopping infatuation with a 20-year-old student named Sofie. Also contains two short films: AMBITION This film continues the sort of direct address narrative explication of ideas that Hartley pursued in THEORY OF ACHIEVEMENT. But this time the object of study is the lengths an individual goes to, in the face of random opposition, to achieve the excellence one's work demands. THEORY OF ACHIEVEMENT This fifteen minute short was shot over a weekend in December of 1990 in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, which - at the time - was just beginning to attract people who were finding it hard to afford places to live across the river in New York City. Most of Hartley's friends lived there, employed at different sorts of jobs while working towards attaining their creative pursuits. A collection of comedic sketches, songs, and recitations considering different attitudes towards work and vocation, success and failure, aspiration and the practical business of living.
