Reviews and Other Info:
2006-10-25 Inside Scoop By NICK KEPPLER
"We've been scouting for about a year for the weirdest films we could find," says Stephanie Martz, director of Independent Exposure's "Halloweird Edition." Anyone who has seen one of IE's screenings of experimental and art house shorts knows that this means an intriguing evening of muttering "what the fuck...?" (In a good, artsy way.) A highlight from today's program, says Martz, is Onion Ainoi by Luke Meeken and Andrew Negrey, a computer-animated short about a man with an onion for a head traveling through a forest that seems to be the only place where he can find things as messed-up-looking as himself. Shana Moulton's Whispering Pines #5 starts out as a parody of New Age, self-help videos but swerves into a non-linear dream segment. (Don't ask why.) Gregory McDonald's Pretty Kitty is about a man who is helplessly infatuated with his cat and becomes frustrated when it doesn't return his love equally ('cause it's, you know, a cat), leading to a gruesome act with an ice cream scooper. TV networks and theaters will be offering plenty of films to frighten you this week, but there's only one place for viewers who'd rather be perplexed than petrified.
