Shantell Martin’s new DVD, KOOB’S, features a diverse collection of short videos that demonstrate the artist’s playful inventiveness with both the concept and tools of drawing, which in Martin’s case include more traditional media such as the humble marker alongside a WACOM electronic drawing tablet and packing tape. Canvases utilized range from projector screens to mock computer tennis to the human body to the outdoor landscape in its entirety. The DVD explores a clean, rendered subgenre currently developing in the visual arts scene. The music videos lean toward minimalist abstraction, creating worlds where the elemental play of light and form compete with structure for the leading role. Varying approaches yield a range of moods from the intricate delicacy of ‘Interustic’ to the surreal ambience of ‘Legs’ and ‘Koob’s’.’’ This DVD has never been screened
