"The New Science" is a single chapter from the ongoing autobiography of Tom Stern. In this chapter, we observe a fractured portion of Tom's personality, named Him, fall in love with a woman named You. But this love seems to arise out of many fragmented elements of the lovers' pasts, presents, and futures: out of You's most recent and awful relationship, out of Him's very specific likes and dislikes, out of the ghost of Him's ex-girlfriends. All of this begs the question, is this love a happenstance, cosmetic kind? Or is this what real love is actually like?
