"Discovery of the Sprite" a collection of animated shorts is based on a series of large-scale highly-detailed, multimedia drawings by Erin Dunn. Dunn layers dense visual images by experimenting with materials and mark-making, creating microcosms of illustrative data. Pitted against vector based drawing Dunn creates complex well crafted drawings that maintain a conspicuous handmade quality. Dunn renders still digital jpge's into high-definition animations synchronizing her own digital recordings with delicate paper and wire puppets. Her process is tedious, her imagery playful. Sea gulls fly through a garden of double helixes, a giant praying mantis leaps into swan-filled bubbles. There is no linear narrative in Dunn's work, she intends her animations to be views as material manifestations of a virtual landscape.
