A provocative look into human sexuality.
Microcinema Interview/Article:
14 March 2000 1. Why did you make this film? I made this film for two reasons: one because I was interested in exploring the topic of female sexuality and two, because I was interested in the idea of a film as a moving painting. 2. How long did it take to make this film? It took two years. 3. What was the biggest challenge you faced in making this film? The biggest challenge was the printing sage. Because the black and white image had to be printed next to the color on color stock, the black and white looked very blueish. It took a number of prints to get the black and white really black and white. 4. Do you have any "war stories" that you would like to tell us about the making of this film? I guess the printing stage. Also, the film began as a narrative story about a stripper. It took many frustrating editing sessions to realize the film was meant to be an experiemmntal structural film! 5. What can you tell us about the technology/equipment that you used? I shot the film with 16mm cameras then optically printed them side by side onto 35mm film. 6. Do you enjoy one aspect of filmmaking more than any others? I love the editing process. 7. In what country or region do you live? Is it important to your art? If so, in what way? I live in New York City and it is very important because I am surrounded by other experiemntal filmmakers and artists. It is inspiring. 8. What does "Microcinema" mean to you? Microcinema to me means providing screening spaces to everyone in a more democratic way. Microcinema allows work that would otherwise get lost to be viewed and it allows audience members to see work they would otherwise not see. 9. What does "Independent" mean to you? Independent means funding your film with your own money or from grants, not huge corporations or production companies. in my case, it means making a film with only a few other people and doing most of it myself. 10. What are a few tips you can give to other filmmakers? Express what you really want to say. Don't worry about the consumer value of your work. 11. Do you have ideas for another film? If so, will you share them with us? I am currently working on a documentary on my sister and I. We are different races and that has been hard to convince others that we are related. I am also working on an experimental film on the Williamsburg Bridge in Brooklyn. 12. Who is your favorite film director? I have a few: Su Friedrich, Cassavetes, Wong Kar Wai and Nina Fonoroff. 13. What is your favorite film? City of Lost Children
