About the Production
The idea of “Something Smells Like Fish” was inspired by my cat Hanna, years ago when he was still a little kitty. One day Hanna jumped on the stove top while I was cooking and his tail caught on fire. Seeing what happened my friend screamed, “Your pussy is on fire!” Fortunately, Hanna was not harmed at all and we all laughed about it. Because what my friend said at that intense moment, the instant became the favorite story of the month.
It took me roughly a year to transform that inspiration into an animated short. The plot is simple : a little kitty walks into the wrong place at the wrong time. The story opens up in a bed room where a couple is getting busy romantically. Without actually seeing what is going on, the audience can only hear the “dialogue” between the couple. The kitty walks in and only pays attention to the goldfish in the bowl on the dresser. Trying to catch the goldfish, the kitty's action coincides with the “dialogue”. Finally, the kitty is about to get the goldfish, but its tail is waving closer to the candles....
The animation is roughly 2 minutes long. Trained as an traditional animator, I illustrated each background. After that I painted them in Photoshop. Most of the sequences were animated frame by frame, with pencil and paper. Sandee, my wonderful animator, and myself planed out each of the key frames and than inbetween them. In the end, we had at least 600 drawings. I composed everything (drawings, music, dialogue, and etc...) in Flash. Once I was done I could say for the first time that I have finished my very first independent film.
There is a list of people that I like to thank: First, my parents for being so supportive during all these years; Dana and Cliff, my professors and mentors; Mitch for doing a wonderful job on voice acting; Justin for the perfect music, and at last, but not least, Sandee for being so brave enough to jump into a year-long project with me. Not only is she my animator, she also has a wonderful intuition for design, as well as a unique and twisted sense of humor.
So sit back. Here comes the kitty....
