Other Info:
My movie Ocean Kiss was initially three vignettes long. It was a story about a teenage mermaid who had grown up in human form. She lived on a 1930-s ocean cruiser, and travelled around the world with her mom, who was a barmaid on the ship. She finds herself transforming by nighttime into a mermaid, at first revealed to her through dreams, because she is in denial of her animal part, which she can’t seem to control. Soon she finds herself going out to hunt for food at sunset in form of a white seal, and her curiosity brings her to the shores of a lonesome sailor. This is where I started my movie:
A lonely sailor plays a love song to the sea. The mermaid entices him to dance with her down the shoreline, and he falls in love with her. She also introduces him to her sea creature friends and mythical sea monsters. When he kisses the mermaid, he goes to her world under the sea where he transforms into a merman, and a band of mermen joins into playing his song.
Ocean Kiss is a stop motion animation. I used foam latex puppets, paper cut-outs on a miniature beach set, and a multiplane.
Ocean Kiss Film Song
Shorebirds to bustle, a lighthouse shining through the haze,
slick stones whose hard arms can break the water’s spine.
What makes the seacoast: sandy grains of brine?
Sandy castles tempt the restless waves.
Bozouki half broken, its cords will free the captive soul.
Music is ransom for waves that rob the shoals.
Bare shores bring sailors, women with their coloured skirts.
Ocean is a wishing well, it can bring you friends,
and love is like the water and its journey never ends.
Seas are surrounded by high cliffs and break walls,
but the untamed, restless ocean has a wisdom of its own.
Life, like sea foam, running through the sand,
beneath you no shores, velvet, undulating waves.
Motion of tides across your face and hands.
Ah! Ocean kisses are alive.
Seas are within me; one day they will stir no more.
Children and shorebirds and sailboats all take flight,
yet water keeps running, lapping, sighing at the shore,
basking with the starfish of the night.
Ocean is a wishing well, it can bring you friends,
and love is like the water and its journey never ends.
Seas are surrounded by high cliffs and break walls,
but the untamed restless ocean has a wisdom of its own.
The untamed, restless ocean has a wisdom of its own.
