Description:
HAL HARTLEY & POSSIBLE FILMS Hal Hartley is an independent film producer and filmmaker. He also works in theater and has created a number of short films and video pieces. His first feature film, THE UNBELIEVABLE TRUTH, was shot in September of 1988 and released theatrically in 1990. He has made many films since then, including TRUST, SIMPLE MEN, AMATEUR, FLIRT, HENRY FOOL, THE BOOK OF LIFE, and NO SUCH THING. He was born November 3, 1959 in Islip, New York, and grew up in the town of Lindenhurst, not far away. He studied at the Massachusetts College Of Art in Boston for the academic year 1977-78, then, in 1980, entered the filmmaking program of the State University of New York at Purchase and graduated in 1984. Possible Films Incorporated is Hal Hartley's production company. For a number of years, he produced or co-produced his work under the company name True Fiction Pictures, a company he formed with his friend and former employer, Jerry Brownstein, shortly after they joined forces to make THE UNBELIEVABLE TRUTH. Recently, Hartley has assigned all of that company's rights and obligations to the new company, Possible Films, Incorporated. Hartley continues to write and direct his films, though he has also staged different versions of his play SOON in both Europe and America. An important part of his activity and process is the making of shorter works in film and video, a collection of which is now available on DVD. He lives New York City.
