Description:
The L'Alternativa team were drawn together by several shared approaches to filmmaking, including constructive criticism, education, reflection, social commitment, ethical and aesthetical integrity and, above all, using our project to foster the city's cultural community, convinced that culture and creativity are two indispensable common goods. Evolution comes about through details. In a post-Olympics Barcelona that was setting off down the road of making an extravaganza out of culture, our incentive for screening these films was that we were the only ones doing it. Now in a pre-Forum Barcelona, our aim is to ensure that people don't confuse independent filmmaking (and everything that goes with it) with the oft-heard line that 'more on offer equals greater diversity'. Over the decade, a great many filmmakers, films and spectators have grown alongside the Festival, all of them seeking refuge from the exclusion and subtle censorship caused by the many 'beautiful' images the laws of the market (and cultural market is no exception) clothes themselves in.
